Champions Update

As part of its 75th Anniversary, The Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) is producing a document that highlights the progress made over the past 10 years in moving toward the 6 MCHB goals. The document aims to describe concrete, positive changes that have occurred over the past 10 years for children, youth, and families. A variety of material is welcome, from photos and drawings to poems. ChampionsInC especially encourages you to think about how services have been better organized in your community so families can use them easily. 

A few guidelines to remember:

  • Multiple submissions can be made from any person, community, or state.
  • Keep submissions to 500 words or less.
  • Deadline for submissions is March 15, 2010.
  • The audience is all of our partners, families, youth, policy makers, legislators, and the general public.
  • ANYONE is eligible to submit: parent, professional, community service organization, youth, medical community, grandparents, etc.

Star Community

The community within the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming has its own unique set of challenges and strengths. Like many typical communities, the success of providing services to children with special health care needs (CSHCN) depends on a large network of supporting organizations and programs. These programs operate within the communities to ensure families of CSHCN are receiving the services they need.

Autism Society of America

Funding Opportunity

Among the various awards and scholarships the Autism Society of America (ASA) offers is the CVS/All Kids Can Scholars Program. This program provides a $1,000 scholarship to a qualified individual with autism to be applied toward the completion of an accredited, postsecondary educational or vocational program of study. All applications must be postmarked by March 31, 2010.

World of Children Health Award

Funding Opportunity

World of Children, Inc. sponsors the World of Children Awards Program, which supports leaders throughout the country who create programs that make a difference in the lives of children. The 2010 Health Award offers a maximum grant of $50,000 and recognizes an individual who has made a significant contribution in the fields of health, medicine, or science. Deadline for nominations is May 1, 2010.

Call for Abstracts: AAP 2010 National Conference

Current News

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has issued a call for abstracts for its 2010 National Conference and Exhibition. The conference will be held October 1, 2010. The AAP has expressed interest in case presentations that address how practicing pediatricians have used health information technology to improve healthcare quality in their practices. Submissions by AAP members and non-members are welcome. Submission deadline is April 16, 2010.

Call for Proposals: The Southwest Conference on Disability

Current News

The Southwest Conference on Disability has issued a call for proposals for the October 6-8, 2010 conference.  The main conference theme will be The ADA at Forty: Looking Ahead to 2030. Deadline for proposals is May 18, 2010.

Check Out the New AMCHP Pulse

Community Resource

AMCHP has released the February edition of its topic-specific e-magazine called the AMCHP Pulse. The Pulse is shared with AMCHP members, partners, and others interested in maternal and child health. The February issue contains many great resources, including a “Who’s New” page featuring new Title V directors.

Documentary on Struggles of Some African-American Populations

Current News

MEE Productions, Inc. has published a documentary called Moving Beyond Survival Mode. The production focuses on the stresses and challenges African American families living in poor and at-risk communities face daily, along with the huge and growing need for stronger mental wellness support systems. The documentary will be released to the public in mid-March.

Webinar Discusses Healthcare Translation Providers

Experts will share best practices for producing multilingual materials that accurately convey information. There will also be a Q&A session afterwards. Pediatrics Reports on Screening and Referral Project

An article entitled Implementing Developmental Screening and Referrals: Lessons Learned From a National Project in the February 2010 issue of AAP’s Pediatrics highlights the results of a 9-month Developmental Surveillance and Screening Policy Implementation Pilot (D-PIP). The D-PIP was in response to a July 2006 revised policy statement by the AAP on developmental surveillance and screening for children from birth to age 3. According to the article, “nearly all participating practices had successfully implemented the AAP’s recommendations.”
