On Wednesday, November 19, a one-hour webinar entitled "Improving Children's Healthy Development Through Federal Policy Change" will discuss federal children health initiatives under the upcoming new U.S. presidency. This event is being cosponsored by The Commonwealth Fund, Voices for America's Children, First Focus, and the National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP). Program Supports Students’ Transition to Adult Life

The College Living Experience (CLE) program provides support to students with varying abilities in gaining a post-secondary education and transitioning into independent adulthood, Among other things, CLE assists with college application and enrollment and partners with local colleges and universities to help with decisions concerning courses of study and degree programs.

Class Benefits Both Mentors and Students

High schoolers in Chicago have become mentors to students less than half their age. Two days each week are spent in a physical-education class geared towards helping young students with special needs. The class counts as an elective for the high school students, but parents and teachers say it has yielded positive results for both groups. Learn more in the Chicago Tribune.

CEO of Special Olympics Calls for Medical Justice

An inspiring speech given by Timothy P. Shriver, chair and CEO of the Special Olympics, at the AAP Plenary Session called for change in both the medical and social environment for children with special health care needs. The article, which is included in the AAP Highlight (PDF), encourages pediatricians to help change the curriculum in medical school to focus on providing optimal care for children with special needs.

Pacific Rim Conference Issues Call for Proposals

The Center on Disability Studies at the University of Hawai‘i is issuing a call for proposals for the Pacific Rim International Conference on Disabilities, being held May 4-5, 2009. Submissions will be considered for a variety of presentations and workshops. The conference will feature high-quality service-learning projects from across the country and around the world. Youth participation is strongly encouraged. The application deadline is November 3, 2008.

New Law May Expand Mental Health Coverage

A new law signed by President Bush on October 3rd will expand mental health coverage for about 113 million people. The act, named the Paul Wellstone and Pete Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008, was part of the recent historic $700-billion plan. Under the legislation, insurance plans can no longer make enrollees pay more for mental health and substance abuse coverage than for physical issues.

ADA Amendment Act Signed into Law

A victory was won for persons with disabilities on September 25, 2008, when the ADA Amendment Act (ADAAA) was signed into law. It is hoped that the ADAAA will restore Congress' original intent to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990.
